Joshua 1:8
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Meditate in this context means to
think about something carefully, calmly, seriously, and for some time.
If there is anything we really lack
as Christians that have the word in us & with us is this – meditating.
Let me be sincere here, there is
really no profound blessing attached to reading the word, but to meditating on
the word. Just give me some few minutes, I will explain further.
There is really something powerful
when you meditate on the word of God. When you take out time to ponder and
reflect on the word you have heard or read, there is so much that will happen
to your spiritual life that will eventually reflect on your physical life.
Okay, let’s move on.
Before you meditate on something,
that thing must have been seen and is in your mind, right? Then you can access it by thinking on
it. The word of God has to be in your heart. It has to be on your lips. That
way you could meditate on it. The above scripture says, “…meditate on it day
and night,…” Meditating on the word will help you live a Christian life. That
life that pleases God. But you have to have His word in you.
And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening…
Gen 24:63
We humans ponder over so
many harmful things for a long period of time merely for it to end up discouraging
us from moving forward. Let us replace the ironies of life that we always reflect
on with the word of God that will bring about shiny days to our lives.
David said,
Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. (Ps 119:97)
No wonder he was a great king that
lost almost no battle. He also said,
We have thought on your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple.(Ps. 48:9)
If you don’t know what to meditate
on, you can start by picking a verse in the bible that elates you. Meditate on
it day & night. Look for a serene place. And enjoy yourself. You will
love it. You won’t want to snap out of it. For hours, you will just be in the
presence of God. And the Holy Spirit will definitely be talking to you.
Here are some other things you can
ponder on…
(a) His work and
mighty deeds (Ps. 77:12, 143: 5)
(b) His precepts (Ps.
119:15)
(c) His promises (Ps.
119:148)
(d) His steadfast
love (Ps. 48:9)
Search out the promises of God to
us His children and meditate on it.
One thing you should also know
about meditating on the word is that meditating on the word of God can fire up
your spirit that your mouth can’t but speak out. I will try to explain this…
So, it means by meditating on His
word, you get His word into your spirit and when it is full, you will just have
to let it out. You find yourself speaking the word everywhere you go. Speaking
to those situations with the right words…
For I am full of words; The spirit within me compels me. Indeed my belly is like wine that has no vent; It is ready to burst like new wineskins. (Job 32:18-19)My heart was hot within me; While I was musing (meditating), the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:
(Ps 39:3)
Pondering on the word of God can do
more than you could ever thing to your spiritual life. Your spirit can be charged
up just by meditating on his word. Isn’t that beautiful..?
